Assignment 5.5 How Do You Handle Being Asked Something That Is Not In Your Job Description

Scenario #1 John Doe has just been hired for his first welding job at Pop’s welding service. He has been told to paint beams. Should he do this?

Job Description Yes, if a worker is directed to do something by a supervisor. If a student is new, and doing his job as instructed this will help to his advance career. Many job’s will contain sub- tasks that are not relevant to the position. Never perform a job or task that is dangerous or not safe.

Scenario #2 John Doe has just been hired as a welder at Xerox, this is a union shop. He is asked to help wire a machine by a co-worker.

Working in a Union Shop If you are a welder in a union shop the rule’s are different. You must know your job description. In most cases, he would not have to do the task because his job description states he is a welder. If a supervisor instructs you to do a task, the task must be done. If not sure of job description, talk to union rep or supervisor. Never perform a job that is not safe or dangerous.

CONCLUSION Always do as instructed by supervisor or boss unless the job is unsafe. Know your job description. Ask supervisor if you have any questions. Do not perform any job that is not safe. Sometimes we all have to perform jobs or tasks we were not hired to do. We may not like this but, we have to do it.
