Seam ripper: Used to remove stitches and cut threads
Pins Pins: (dressmaker): anchors pattern to fabric for cutting or holds layers of fabric together when sewing
Pincushion Used to keep needles and pins handy while working
Needles Hand stitching is done with needles. Choose one with a sharp point and medium length for best hand sewing.
Thimble Used to push a needle through fabric while hand sewing.
Shears/Scissors: What is the difference? shears—large scissors used to cut fabric Have long blades with one handle for the thumb and one handle for two or more fingers scissors—smaller, used to cut out patterns, clip threads, etc. Pinking Shears- zigzag edge
Rotary cutter: Round cutting tool with a sharp blade Must be used on plastic cutting mat
Seam Gauge: 6” ruler used to gauge hems and small measurements
Tape measure: 60” flexible tool used to take body measurements
Transparent rulers: Used with rotary cutters, and pattern alterations
Marking pens/pencils: used to make marks on fabrics, should be able to remove easily without damaging fabrics.
Measuring Increments: 1/8” ¼” ½” 1”
Types of Stitches Basting Stitch- used to sew pieces together temporarily. ZigZag Stitch- is useful for finishing seam edges and making buttonholes. Reinforcement Stitch- a short stitch used to strengthen the stitching area at a corner or point.
