Salvador Late or Early Authors choose words and phrases very carefully. The words they choose help the reader understand the characters and their lives.

“Salvador Late or Early” From Woman Hollering Creek and Other Stories

Salvador with eyes the color of caterpillar, Salvador with crooked hair and crooked teeth, Salvador whose name the teacher cannot remember, is a boy who is no one’s friend, runs along somewhere in that vague direction where homes are the color of bad weather, lives behind a raw wood doorway, shakes the sleepy brothers awake, ties their shoes, combs their hair with water, feeds them milk and cornflakes from a tin cup in the dim dark of morning.

Salvador late or early, sooner or later arrives with the string of younger brothers ready. Helps his mama, who is busy with the business of the baby. Tugs the arms of Cecilio, Arturito, make them hurry, because today, like yesterday, Arturito has dropped the cigar box of crayons, has let go the hundred little fingers of red, green, yellow, blue, and the nub of black sticks that tumble and slip over and beyond the asphalt puddles until the crossing- guard lady holds back the blur of traffic for Salvador to collect them again.

Salvador inside that wrinkled shirt, inside the throat that must clear itself and apologize each time it speaks, inside that forty-pound body of boy, with its geography of scars, its history of hurt, limbs stuffed with feathers and rags, in what part of the eyes, in what part of the heart, in what cage of the chest where something throbs with both fists and knows only what Salvador knows, inside a body too small to contain the hundred balloons of happiness, the single guitar of grief, is a boy like any other, disappearing

out the door, beside the schoolyard gate, where he has told his brothers they must wait. Collects the hands of Cecilio and Arturito, scuttles off dodging the many schoolyard colors, the elbows and wrists criss-crossing, the several shoes running. Grows small and smaller to the eye, dissolves into the bright horizon, flutters in the air before disappearing like a memory of kites.

Questions 1.Re-read the first paragraph. How is it punctuated? What effect does this have on the reading of that paragraph? 2.Give specific examples of imagery (language that appeals to sense of smell, taste, vision, touch, hearing) used in the first paragraph. What color is “bad weather”? 3.Re-read the second paragraph. What do you learn about Salvador in this section?

Questions 4. How do the colors of the crayons scattered on the street contrast with the visual imagery given in the first two paragraphs? 5. Reread the final paragraph (slides 5 and 6). How is figurative language used to describe Salvador, particularly personification, simile, and metaphor?

Questions 6. Why do you think the author, Sandra Cisneros, chose to write about a character like Salvador, who she describes in the first paragraph as “no one’s friend” ? 7. Are characters like Salvador often chosen as subjects of stories? (Can you think of a movie, poem, or a novel that features a character like Salvador?)

WRITE 1.Make a list of people you know personally who most likely haven’t been or wouldn’t become the subject of a story, poem, or movie. You may also create a fictional character based on people you know. 2.Choose one person from your list and write at least one page about the person. Following Sandra Cisneros’s model, use imagery and/or figurative language to bring your character to life.
