DO NOW 1.Label the cell: 2.Take out HW

8 Organelles you must know for the Regents 1.Nucleus- Stores DNA 2.Cell Membrane- Controls what enters and leaves the cell, “waste removal” 3.Cell Wall- PLANTS ONLY, external to membrane 4.Cytoplasm- Liquid in the cell (transport) 5.Ribosome- Protein synthesis 6.Mitochondria- Makes energy (cellular respiration) 7.Chloroplast- Makes glucose (photosynthesis) 8.Vacuole- Storage (food/water)

Which organelles are involved in “metabolic processes” – Ribosome (protein synthesis) – Mitochondria (cellular respiration) – Chloroplast (photosynthesis)

Which organelle builds monomers into polymers? – Ribosome

Which organelles are involved in “storage”? – Vacuole – Nucleus

Which organelles are found in PLANTS ONLY? – Chloroplast – Cell Wall

Which organelle is responsible for transporting materials? – Cytoplasm

The cytoplasm is a water-based liquid with different substances dissolved in it. The cytoplasm is maintained at a certain concentration….

The concentration of a liquid means how much stuff is dissolved into that liquid. The more stuff in the liquid, the higher the concentration. The less stuff in the liquid, the less concentrated it is.

HIGH Concentration of sugar molecules

LOWER Concentration of sugar molecules

Molecules like their space!!! Naturally, molecules will move from a place of high concentration to a place of low concentration.

High concentration of molecules Low concentration of molecules

“ High concentration ”= where there is MORE “ Low concentration ”= where there is LESS

The movement of a molecule from a HIGH concentration to a LOW concentration is called DIFFUSION

WHAT IS CYTOPLASM? What does the “concentration” of a liquid mean? What is a “high concentration?” What is a “low concentration?”

In which direction do particles move? What is this movement called???????

DIFFUSION!!!!!

Diffusion happens naturally, it does NOT require energy (ATP)

Molecules will diffuse across the cell membrane depending on their concentration. In order for a cell to be in homeostasis, the concentration inside the cell MUST BE EQUAL to the outside of the cell.

If there is a “high concentration” of a molecule inside of the cell…. Some of that molecule needs to diffuse… OUT of the cell. There is a “low concentration” of a molecule inside the cell… MORE of that molecule needs to move into the cell.

ONCE AGAIN… Molecules will ONLY diffuse until there are equal concentrations on both sides of the cell membrane. When they are equal, the cell is in HOMEOSTASIS, or EQUILIBRIUM

INSIDE OUTSIDE

HighLow Equal “Homeostasis” “Equilibrium”

“LOW”“HIGH”

EQUAL CONCENTRATION. Diffusion Stops! HOMEOSTASIS

HIGH LOW ABAB

Not all substances can pass through the membrane… If a molecule CAN pass through the membrane, the molecule is permeable. If a molecule cannot pass through the membrane, the molecule is not permeable

Permeable= able to pass through Because the cell membrane only lets certain molecules pass through, we can say that the membrane is “selectively permeable” “Selectively Permeable”= only some get through
