The Microscope and Cells

What is every living thing made up of? Cells.

What piece of equipment do we use to see cells? A microscope.

Which lens do we use first on the microscope? The low power (smallest) lens is used first.

What chemical did we use to stain the onion cell? Iodine

What is the job or function of the lens? To magnify the image.

What is the job (function) of the focus wheel? To give a clear image.

Name 3 things found in both plant and animal cells. Cell membrane, nucleus cytoplasm.

What does the cell membrane do? It controls what enters/leaves the cell.

What does the nucleus do? It controls the cells activity.

What does the cytoplasm do? It is a jelly like material where chemical reactions take place.

Name the 3 extra parts found ONLY in plant cells. Cell wall, chloroplasts, vacuole.

What does the cell wall do? It Gives the plant cell its shape.

What does chloroplasts do? It makes food by photosynthesis. (Contains chlorophyll - green chemical)

What does the vacuole do? Storage(Space filled with sap)

Why does a microscope need a heavy base? To stop it from toppling over.

What does the iris adjuster do? Controls the amount of light getting to the slide.

What is a tissue? A group of cells working together.

What is an Organ? A group of tissues working together e.g. heart

What is a group of organs working together called? A System.

What are systems organised into? An organism or individual The End
