28 Dioceses

Our history Chaplains first came with British colonial forces and settlers in the late 18th century Robert Gray became the first Bishop of Cape Town in 1847, arriving here in 1848

Our history (continued …) The Church of the Province of Southern Africa was established in 1870, becoming the Anglican Church in Southern Africa in 2006 Archbishop Thabo Makgoba became our 13th Metropolitan in 2008

Our past affects our present Overcoming the legacies of apartheid within South Africa and its impacts on its neighbours Rebuilding nations after civil war in Mozambique and in Angola

Today we are (very roughly) 4-5 million people in 1000 parishes served by 2000 clergy and 31 Bishops with a Prayer Book in 13 languages and speaking some 30 home languages

In our great diversity, we gather formally, at Provincial Synod …

… and informally, at our recent Anglicans Ablaze conference

All sharing in a common vision

Our Vision The Anglican Community in Southern Africa seeks to be A NCHORED in the love of Christ – revealed in Scripture C OMMITTED to God’s mission – with compassion and joy TRANSFORMED by the Holy Spirit – through discipleship and worship
