5.1 Solving Systems of Equations Objectives: --To identify a system of equations --To determine if a point is a solution to a system --To use graphing calculators to solve system

Definitions: System of equations: a set of two or more equations that have variables in common Solution to a system: is an ordered pair that makes both equations true

How to verify if a point is a solution to a system: If you are given a point and are asked to verify if it is a solution to a system: 1.Substitute the ordered pair into the system 2.Make sure that the ordered pair makes both equations true If it makes both equations true, then it is a solution to the system.

Examples: Verify if the given points are solutions to the given system a) (-15.6, 0.2) b) (-4,23) c) (2, 12.3)

Solving Systems using the Graphing Calculators Systems of equations can be solved by graphing on the calculators. 1.First solve each equation for y 2.Enter each equation into the y= editor on the calculator 3.Hit graph button 4. Use the trace function to find point of intersection of the lines

Examples to solve by graphing: a) b) c) d)
