Jazz became very popular in New Orleans in the early 1900s. The Great Migration caused many Jazz musicians, including the famous Louis Armstrong, to move North. The introduction of Jazz to the North was met with vast enthusiasm.
The section of New York known as Harlem became a cultural center for African American life. Many creative African American writers, musicians, and artists moved there. What resulted was an era known as the Harlem Renaissance.
A new generation of American writers emerged during the 1920s. These writers were sickened by American consumerism and materialism of the 1920s. These ideas were expressed through their writing. They were nicknamed “The Lost Generation”.
Painting and photography became more and more respected as an art form in the 1920s. Murals also became popular and expressed the ideas of the artist.
Architecture began to reflect the creativity of the time. NYC so a huge increase in the construction of skyscrapers. Among the famous buildings built include the Chrysler Building and the Empire State Building The Empire State Building was the tallest building in the world until 1954.
