Collection & Analysis of Lab Samples Equipment Objective 4.01 Vet Assisting

Vet Lab Equipment Microscope – useful for basic testing procedures and to help identify and diagnose problems Place slide of stage View through eye piece Turn focus knobs Clean lenses, slides and cover slips after each use Keep covered when not in use Be trained on use

Vet Lab Equipment Centrifuge – used to spin lab samples at a high rate of speed and force Microhematocrit tube – thin, small glass tubes that hold blood Standard – used to spin large volumes of liquid After sample is placed in centrifuge, the lid is closed and secured, then placed on the proper setting and time Do not stand directly over

Vet Lab Equipment Refactometer – tool used to measure the weight of a liquid and determine a liquid’s pH level A liquid sample is placed on the prism Then held to a light source and viewed to determine specific gravity Needs to be calibrated periodically with distilled water 647&cat=796

Vet Lab Equipment Blood Chemistry Analyzers – machine that run blood samples including complete blood counts (CBC’s) using whole blood, serum or plasma medical_lab_test_veterinary_hematology_analyzer_automated_blo od_analyzer html

Vet Lab Equipment Serological Test Kits – chemical kits to determine viruses and diseases with reagents that typically are kept in the refrigerator.
