Symptom Redness, swelling of the tonsils and throat (Difficulty feeding, Pain with swallowing, Nausea and vomiting, Hoarseness) Fever Headache Abdominal pain Cough Runny nose Tenderness in the glands of the neck (swollen lymph glands) White patches on the tonsils Redness of the eyes Ear pain (nerves that go to the back of the throat also go to the ear) Peritonsillar abscess

Cause Bacteria – streptococcus. (GAS)  strep Throat  rheumatic fever Viral (most of the cases) – Recovered in one week Pyrogen? Immune response? Normal bacteria flora may cause tonsillitis (immune aberrant )

Treatment Penicillin Erythromycin ( for pt. who is allergic to penicillin) Symptom release – ibuprofen or acetaminophen (throat pain & fever)
