Natural Resources and Materials Depending on what material the watch is made of, the natural resources required for manufacturing can be gold, steel, and a variety of other metals. Sand and limestone are needed to make glass. Fossil fuels are used to heat the metals in manufacturing.

Processing the Raw Materials The metals are heated in preparation to be put into molds in the manufacturing process using power from fossil fuels. Glass is produced using many different natural resources. Chemicals are used to produce the batteries in some watches.

Manufacturing the Watches The heated metals are poured into molds of different shapes to create the numerous gears and designs. Machines that produce the watches require electricity to run.

Use of the Watches Watches must be transported to stores around the world, which uses energy. Higher end jewelry stores use powerful lights to display the watches. This uses a lot of electricity. The watches run on batteries, which not only power the hands, but also may power backlights on some models. Since the watches run on batteries, they do not require electricity from outside sources to work.

Disposal of Watches Some kinds of watches can be recycled to create other products, but others are not and must be sent to landfills. The batteries must be disposed of properly, or they may leak harmful chemicals into the landfill and surrounding environment.
