TRANSFORM from unprepared to prepared! DON’T LET ENERGY TRANSFORMATIONS BEAT YOU! STUDY GUIDE FOR DCA #6

is transformed into Mechanical Energy Electrical Energy Motor

is transformed into Electrical Energy Sound energy

Renewable, Nonrenewable, or Inexhaustible? Renewable Source of Energy: Hydroelectric Energy

Review: SOURCES of ENERGY RENEWABLE Can be replenished or replaced within a usable amount of time Trees/Plants (Biomass) Heating, Electricity, Food, Transportation Water (Hydroelectric) Droughts may cause unavailability Oxygen & Hydrogen Transportation (Fuel Cells)

is transformed into Electrical Energy (as electrons are produced) Chemical Energy Stored in the battery is transformed into Light Energy (Radiant) Know this well!

Oil (petroleum), natural gas, coal are examples of nonrenewable resources. There is a LIMITED SUPPLY and it takes millions of years to replenish or replace – too long to be useful to us Another name for them is….. fossil fuels

Electrical Energy Thermal (Heat) Energy

Renewable, Nonrenewable, or Inexhaustible? Renewable Source of Energy: Biomass Energy from Trees/Plants

transforms In science, we don’t just say that energy changes from one form to another, we say that it… or converts

Energy can NOT be lost or destroyed; it can only be changed into a different form of energy!!!!

Any form of energy can be transformed into any other form.

The transfer of thermal energy through direct contact between particles of matter. (Examples: Heating a pot on the stove or a metal spoon placed in a cup of hot chocolate)

ELECTROMAGNET Click on the picture below hyperlink to a website in which you can investigate other ways to affect the strength of an electromagnet: http://www.fossweb.com/modules3-6/MagnetismandElectricity/activities/electromagnet.html

Some advantages and disadvantages of wind energy. Wind is free and will not run out so the cost is in building the wind turbine. Wind power generation does not create greenhouse gases There are very few safety risks with wind turbines. (EXCEPT TO BIRDS!) We can only use wind turbines in areas where there is a lot of wind. Sometimes there may be days where there is little wind. Just like we cannot use solar panels without the Sun, we cannot produce electricity from little or no wind..

Solar energy is Inexhaustible since it uses the sun. Must have the Sun to work. Link

, Mechanical Energy of falling water A generator inside a dam transforms Generator Electrical Energy (that can be used to run a machine) Water Flow into Turbine

Nonrenewable Resources Cannot be replaced in a short amount of time. Made from dead plants and animals millions of years ago. Once we use them up, they are gone forever. We are using them faster than nature can replace them. We will run out of fossil fuels sooner or later!!

is transformed into Radiant (Light) Energy Chemical Energy Thermal (Heat) Energy and Know this well!

Renewable Resources Things that can be replaced in a relatively short amount of time. We must be wise about how we use these items! We could overuse, pollute, or destroy them too fast for them to be replaced. EXAMPLES: Trees, plants, animals, water

Heat is transferred by the movement of currents within a liquid or gas. Heat rises, cools and drops then heats up again and rises again.

Sound Energy Electrical Energy Mechanical Energy

is transformed into Electrical Energy Heat Energy

The transfer of energy (heat) by electromagnetic waves. It does not require matter to transfer its heat.

is transformed into Light (Radiant) Energy Chemical Energy of a battery

VOCABULARY WORDS FOR DCA # 6 1.DEPLETED - no longer sufficient; "supplies are low"; "our funds are depleted" 2.ELECTROMAGNET - A device consisting of a coil of insulated wire wrapped around an iron core that becomes magnetized when an electric current flows through the wire. 3.DISADVANTAGE - An unfavorable condition or circumstance. To put at a disadvantage; hinder or harm (hazardous). 4.CONVECTION – The transfer of heat by movement of currents. 5.CONDUCTION – The transfer of heat through direct physical contact. 6.RADIATION – The direct transfer of energy by electromagnetic waves. 7.HAZARDOUS - involving or causing danger or risk; liable to hurt or harm. 8.INFERENCE - the reasoning involved in drawing a conclusion or making a logical judgment on the basis of circumstantial evidence and prior conclusions rather than on the basis of direct observation. 9. HYDROELECTRIC - Using the power of water currents to generate electric power. Generally, hydroelectric power is created by directing water flow through a turbine, where the water causes fans to turn, creating the torque needed to drive an electric generator. (Renewable) 10.FOSSIL FUELS - An energy-rich substance (such as petroleum, coal, or natural gas) derived from the accumulated remains of ancient plants and animals and used as fuel. (Non-renewable energy source)
