1 Ben and Trevor Life Cycle of a Book

2 Design We investigated the life cycle of a book. The materials used to make a book include paper, cardboard, and ink. The process used to make a book includes processing the paper, printing on a press, and bindery A book will last as long as the owner chooses to take care of it. 3 Materials Acquisition Paper is a natural resource that comes from trees. Cardboard is a form of paper so it also comes from trees. Paper and cardboard both come from the natural resource of trees so they are eco friendly. This also means the use of these materials depletes a natural resource. 4 Materials Processing The process of making paper out of trees is: take the bark off tree, grind logs into woodchips, pulp with chemicals (or heat or grinding) and bleach pulp. Pulp has water and minerals added, forming a paper webbing. The webbing is pressed, dried, heated, and coated. It is then dried again, put into rolls and cut to the proper size. 5 Manufacturing The paper is printed on a printing press to put the words on the pages. The bindery is a machine that binds the pages into a book. The paper is printed on a printing press to put the words on the pages. The bindery is a machine that binds the pages into a book.

6 Packaging Books are boxed and shipped off to bookstores and libraries. The boxes are made of cardboard at a factory. This process involves using electricity, paper and tape. It might make waste if not designed efficiently or recycled properly. Books are boxed and shipped off to bookstores and libraries. The boxes are made of cardboard at a factory. 7 Distribution These books may be manufactured across the globe from where they will be shipped. Shipping may occur by train, plane, truck or boat. Any of these would produce gas into the air therefore making greenhouse gasses. These books may be manufactured across the globe from where they will be shipped. 8 Use Using a book is eco friendly so it does not produce waste. It does not create or use energy, so it has no environmental impact. If a book is not properly cared for and disposed of it can become a waste product. Using a book is eco friendly so it does not produce waste. 9 Reuse / Recycling Books can be reused over and over again by the original owner or shared with others. Once a book is worn out it can be recycled like other paper products. Reuse and recycling do not consume any energy. Books can be reused over and over again by the original owner or shared with others. 10 Disposal If a book is properly recycled than it will not become waste in a landfill but can be turned into a new product. If a book is not properly recycled but instead thrown away it will unnecessarily become waste in a landfill. Be environmentally friendly and recycle your books because if you throw away your books it will mean more trees need to be cut down for future paper needs.
