Village Life 70% of Indians live in villages and farm for a living Most in villages live in mud houses with no running water Cooking done outside; sleep outside on hot nights

Food and Clothing Most Indians are vegetarians; some eat goat and chicken; if live close sea- fish Most clothing is light and loose- due to hot climate Many Indian women still wear a sari- brightly colored cloth that is draped over the body like a long dress

City Life Cities are very crowded; lots of poor people Major cities in India- Mumbai, Calcutta, New Delhi Mumbai’s pop density = 64,000 people per square mile (NYC = 25,000/sq mile)

Challenges Feeding more than 1 Billion people- gov’t has given land to people to promote more farming Expanding Industry- creating more jobs; one of world’s leading industrial nations Education – illiteracy is still widespread; most villages now have a school Health Care- avg life expectancy = 68 years: many can’t afford basic health care; some towns and cities have little sanitation and bad drinking water
