3 WHAT WE WILL LEARN Where do most people in the world live? How do scientists measure population? How is the earth’s population changing?

4 POPULATION DISTRIBUTION Land covers about 30% of the earth’s surface, not all of it is used by humans. The most populated continent on earth is Asia with more than half of the world’s population on the continent.

6 POPULATION DENSITY Population Density is the average number of people living in a square mile or square kilometer. It gives us an idea of how crowded a country or region is.

9 URBANIZATION When people leave farms and villages to move to cities it is called Urbanization. Most people move to a city with the goal of finding jobs. Developed countries are industrialized. Developing countries are working toward industrialization.

10 POPULATION GROWTH How fast has the earth’s population grown? 1800- 857 Million 1804- 1 Billion 1900- 1.6 Billion 1991- 5.1 Billion 2005- 6.5 Billion 2015- 7.3 Billion

11 HOW DO WE MEASURE POPULATION GROWTH? DEMOGRAPHERS – are scientists who study populations. -They measure population growth by comparing the birthrate and death rate of a region. - Better health care and living conditions have decreased the death rate, and people are living longer.
