Housing The tribes built lodges to live in. Lodges were large round huts built in a deep hole. These were made of earth packed over a wooden frame. While hunting, tepees would be made, a circular frame consisting of poles coming together at a point. These poles were used to carry buffalo meat. The tribes built lodges to live in. Hunting The Native Americans would dress in an animal disguise and creep up to buffalo to kill them. The hunters were on foot and the buffalo were very fast. Buffalo weigh close to 2,000 pounds or 1 ton. If they could not creep up on them they would run a herd over a cliff. New Hunting Horses came to the land by way of the Spanish. Some horses got free and moved north. After moving north, the Cheyenne tamed the horses and used the horses to help kill buffalo. At first a bow and arrow would be used to hunt, but later a gun would come to use. Horses were then taken from other tribes through raids because it showed a sign of wealth in the tribe.
