Summary ● In April 1938 the voice of Death tells Liesel's story. Her brother dies on a train journey and she is sent to foster parents, because her mother is in danger. At her first day in school she meets Rudy and they become friends. When her foster father, Hans, finds out that she cannot read he starts teaching her to read, which fascinates Liesel. The second World War breaks out and Liesel and Rudy become members of the Hitler Youth Movement. After a book burning Liesel steals a book, which has not been burned. At a night of violence against the Jews, Max, a Jewish boy finds shelter in Liesel's house. But one day Max must leave, because he is in danger of being noticed by the police. At the peak of the second World War the only target for the family is to survive.

Viewers opinion „It is beautifully done and the characters were all so believable and warm. Rosa fascinated me completely with how stern, but how clear it was to see the depth of her kindness with every cruel statement she made. It was one of the first movies I'd seen with the theme of WWII where I felt the pain of the survivors, and the families waiting for their men to return. I recommend it.“ „ I don't know whether the novel The Book Thief should be considered "unfilmable" but the adaptation makes a compelling case that it shouldn't have been filmed. A misfire in far too many meaningful aspects, The Book Thief is so bad that it's tough to decide whether it's better used as a sleep aid or watched while under the influence as an object of derision.“

My own opinion ● I have watched many films about the second World War. They mostly just show the horrifying scenes of death camps. But this film shows how Liesel understands the power of the words and how Hitler manipulated the people. This film makes the audience think about how Hitler made the people believe him rather than just showing what happened during the second World War. This is why I definitely recommend the film “The Book Thief”.
