2 Susan Campbell Bartoletti Born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Author of picture books, novels, and nonfiction children's books. First short story was sold in 1989. She had to decide between teaching full- time or writing full-time. Other books – Hitler Youth: Growing Up in Hitler’s Shadow, and No Man’s Land: A Young Soldiers Story.

3 “The Boy Who Dared” Published in 2008. Fictionalized Historical Novel Setting is in Germany, after losing World War 1. Hitler and the Nazi party is coming to power.

4 The Beginning Helmuth and his two brothers (Gerhard and Hans) grow up with their mother (Mutti). Helmuth is three, Gerhard is seven, and Hans is eight. They live near their grandparents Opa and Oma.

5 Adolf Hitler Around noon on January 30, 1933 Adolf Hitler was sworn in as the new chancellor of the Reich. Televisions and radio stations blare as soldiers parade up and down the streets, handing out leaflets, saluting, and yelling “Heil Hitler”. Hitler beings to banish everything that is “non-German” such as radio stations, television shows, and stores owned by Jewish citizens.

6 Hugo Hϋbener Helmuth’s step-father. Always calls Helmuth “My Boy” Nazi Officer Brings German lies into Helmuth's family. Forces Helmuth into Hitler Youth and other Hitler programs. Always tells Helmuth that he will one day, be a very good Nazi leader.

7 Bristish Radio Brought home by Gerhard from his training in boot camp. Put away in the closet at their grandparents flat. Helmuth sneaks the radio out every night to get a different perspective on Germany from other countries. Shares the radio station with his friends Rudi and Karl. Then later with Gerhard Dϋwer, a friend Helmuth works with.

8 Opposing Germany and Nazis Helmuth reads forbidden books he finds at work and listens to the radio. Helmuth creates pamphlets with the truth about Germany and the Nazis. Helmuth, Rudi, and Karl distribute the pamphlets all over town. Telephone Booths, mailboxes, and apartment houses. They hope the truth will spread throughout Germany.

9 Helmuth’s Downfall The Gestapo and Nazi Party Officers find the pamphlets. They began questioning and torturing German citizens trying to get people to talk. One of the boys involved blames Helmuth for everything. Helmuth is questioned, tortured, and thrown in a cell to await his sentencing.
