PEMDAS Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally

What does PEMDAS mean? Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally Parenthesis Exponents Multiplication Division Addition Subtraction This is the order we will do operations in. Whenever we are given an equation that we need to solve, we start with the parenthesis, and continue down the order until we hit subtraction.

How to apply PEMDAS PEMDAS An easy way to remember how to use PEMDAS is to make a chart: After doing each operation, put an X in the box if you used the operation and a 0 in the box if you didn’t use it. With each step, go to a new line on the chart. By doing this, you’ll be sure to remember each of the operations. You will see a clearer example of this on the next slide.

PEMDAS Chart More specifically, you can use the chart for each step: 2+6(3+1) 2 2+6(4) 2 2+6(16) 2+96 98 PEMDAS X XX XXX XXXOX XXX0X0

Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally! Let’s try some practice exercises… (3+1)×4 Do the problem before moving to the next slide where you can check your work!

Solution (3+1)×4 (Parenthesis) (4)×4 (Multiplication) 16

Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally! Let’s try one more… (9×2)÷(2+5) 2 +24

Solution (9×2)÷(2+5) 2 +24 (Parenthesis) (18)÷(2+5) 2 +24 (Parenthesis) (18)÷(7) 2 +24 (Exponents) (18)÷(49)+24 (Division) (18/49)+24 (Addition) 24 18/49
