Lesson 2.5: Solving equations with variables on both sides Algebra 1 Mrs. Mongold

Steps to solve multi-step problems Distribute and/or combine like terms –Combine all constants and variables Add or subtract the variables to one side (move the smaller one, this keeps variable positive so we don’t have to worry about negatives) Add or subtract the constants to the other side Solve as we did in the first few lessons

REMEMBER PEMDAS P- please --- parenthesis E- excuse --- exponents M- My--- Multiplication D- Dear--- Division A- Aunt--- Addition S- Sally--- Subtraction

Example Solve -2 + 10k = 8k -1

Example Solve -2 + 10k = 8k -1 -8k -8k

Example Solve -2 + 10k = 8k -1 -8k -8k -2 + 2k = -1

Example Solve -2 + 10k = 8k -1 -8k -8k -2 + 2k = -1 +2 +2

Example Solve -2 + 10k = 8k -1 -8k -8k -2 + 2k = -1 +2 +2 2k = 1

Example Solve -2 + 10k = 8k -1 -8k -8k -2 + 2k = -1 +2 +2 2k = 1 2 2

Example Solve -2 + 10k = 8k -1 -8k -8k -2 + 2k = -1 +2 +2 2k = 1 2 2 k = ½

Example Solve -2 + 10k = 8k -1 -8k -8k -2 + 2k = -1 +2 +2 2k = 1 2 2 k = ½ CHECK YOUR ANSWER!!!! -2 + 10( ½ ) = 8 ( ½ ) – 1 -2 + 5 = 4 - 1 3 = 3

Example Solve 2m + 5 = 5(m – 7) -3m

Example Solve 2m + 5 = 5(m – 7) -3m 2m + 5 = 5m - 35 – 3m

Example Solve 2m + 5 = 5(m – 7) -3m 2m + 5 = 5m - 35 – 3m 2m + 5 = 2m - 35

Example Solve 2m + 5 = 5(m – 7) -3m 2m + 5 = 5m - 35 – 3m 2m + 5 = 2m – 35 -2m - 2m

Example Solve 2m + 5 = 5(m – 7) -3m 2m + 5 = 5m - 35 – 3m 2m + 5 = 2m – 35 -2m - 2m 5 = - 35

Example Solve 2m + 5 = 5(m – 7) -3m 2m + 5 = 5m - 35 – 3m 2m + 5 = 2m – 35 -2m - 2m 5 = - 35

Example Solve 2m + 5 = 5(m – 7) -3m 2m + 5 = 5m - 35 – 3m 2m + 5 = 2m – 35 -2m - 2m 5 = - 35 No Solution O
