2 Why? ► Preserve the body for the afterlife ► A preserved body was necessary for passage into the afterlife

3 The Organs ► Heart  Stays in the body ► Liver, Lungs, Stomach, Intestines  Removed and placed into Canopic jars ► Brain  Removed through the nose and sometimes through the back of the head

4 Now what? ► Body is submerged in salts to dry it out. ► Spices are applied for ceremonial reasons (and to kill the smell) ► The body is wrapped in linen and coated with resin to seal it ► The body is placed in a sarcophagus (coffin or casket) within the tomb ► The tomb is filled with objects the deceased will need for their afterlife
