2 OCCUPATION Meaning of occupation

3 Occupation is an activity or business people engage in so as to earn a lawful living e.g teaching, trading, fishing, farming, carpentry e.t.c.

4 Types of occupation There are various kinds of occupations but they can be grouped into three major groups; Industrial occupation Commercial occupation services

5 Industrial occupation
These are activities concerned with obtaining raw materials and turning them into finished products. Industrial activities are divided into three, namely; Extractive Manufacturing construction

6 Extractive occupation : this is concerned with tapping the raw material from the land. Examples of occupation under here are fishing, quarrying, mining Manufacturing industry: This has to do with changing of raw materials into finished products e.g limestone into cement. Construction industry: This is the assembling of manufactured products into forms that can satisfy human wants.

7 Commercial occupation
This includes all activities concerned with the buying, selling and distribution of goods and services e.g advertising (advertisers), transportation (transporters), importers, bankers, traders e.t.c

8 Service This involves occupations that provide personal and indirect services to the people. We have two types of service: Direct service: Here the employees render their services to their employers who pay for such services e.g cooks, barbers, gardeners, taxi drivers Indirect service: are services rendered to the public but the government pays for such services e.g civil servants

9 Career opportunities in commerce
These are the various professions that are available for students of commerce. The following are the career opportunities open to commercial students Teaching at all levels Career in the civil service Trading Insurance

10 Marketing Management Banking Accounting e.t.c

11 Factors that determine choice of occupation
Geographical location Education and training Job conditions (salary and wages ) Government policies Availability of large market Interest and skills Other factors include: sex type, industrial hazard, religion, risks involved in the performance of some occupation e.t.c

12 Assignment List and explain FIVE (5) commercial occupations and THREE (3) industrial occupations
