2. Culture Consist of knowledge, values, customs, and physical objects that are shared by members of a society.

3. Society Is a group of people who live in a defined territory and participate in a common culture. Culture is that society’s total way of life.

4. Culture has 2 segments Material Culture= Tangible artifacts, physical objects, and items that are found in society. Non- material Culture= Intangible and abstract components i.e., values, beliefs, and traditions.

5. Beliefs reflect our culture. Ex. Selecting a marriage partner based on romantic love seems natural in America, yet in MOST of world’s cultures, selecting a spouse is NOT based on romantic love.

6. Language Is a shared symbol system of rules and meanings that govern the production and interpretation of speech. Scientist consider language the marker of a distinct culture and identity. When language is “lost” the culture becomes weak.

7. Thoughts on this bill? The English Language Unity Act passed in the House of Representatives in 1996 It tried to amend Federal law to declare English to be the official language of the U.S. Government.

8. Sapir-Whorf hypothesis Language determines thought. Language affects what people notice, label, and think about as well as how they organized and categorize what they perceive. Ex. Inuit of Canada have many different words for the word snow. Speakers of English only have one word for snow…”snow”
