4 8-4 Chemistry seminar outcomes Students will present chemistry topic to audience §Based on presentation at American Chemical Society meeting Outcomes §Develop a presentation abstract §Organize and develop presentation based on abstract §Logical organization and presentation style §Participate in discussions stemming from presentations

5 8-5 Expectation and policies Attendance required §Prior notification of absences necessary Timely submission of information §Points deducted if deadlines are not kept Participation in discussion Date of presentation will be randomly selected §Early volunteers welcomed §Anticipate 2 presentations per class Presentation on own research or literature §Own research preferred àOrganize presentation with research director §Literature presentation requires sending copies of articles to instructor 1 week prior to abstract deadline àIteration on literature presentation àEarlier submission encouraged Presentation 20-25 minutes

6 8-6 Grading and organization Attendance (10 points) §2 points deducted for each missed class Abstract (25 points) §Between 150-200 words §Adequately describe presentation §Needs to be complete 10 days prior to seminar Presentation (60 points) §15 point for electronic presentation àclarity of figures, organization §35 point for oral presentation àContact with audience, clarity of ideas, logical flow §10 points for question and answer àHow question is answered Participation (20 points) §Involvement in discussion of other presentations

7 8-7 Presentation comments Indication on form if comments from faculty Rank from 0 to 10 (10 highest) §Abstract (describes presentation, use of references) §Introduction (outline, statement of purpose) §Figures and slides (easy to read, useful figures) §Organization of presentation (follows outline, addresses ideas) §Technical level of presentation (appropriate level, suitable for audience) §Clarity of oral presentation (well spoken, can be heard): §Engagement with audience (eye contact, response to comments) §Questions and Answers (addresses questions, provides clear ideas, demonstrates knowledge)
