4 The Federalist party having declined, there was little open party feeling 1817-1823 A period in United States political history in which partisan bitterness abated

5 Period of dramatic growth and intense nationalism Continued Florida was acquired from Spain to general acclaim After the War of 1812 all sections were anxious to return to a normal life and to forget political issues

6 Policy that was introduced on December 2, 1823 It stated that further efforts by European countries to colonize land or interfere with states in the Americas would be viewed by the United States of America as acts of aggression requiring US intervention. It asserted that the Western Hemisphere was not to be further colonized by European countries The United States would not interfere with existing European colonies nor in the internal concerns of European countries.

7 The Doctrine was issued at the time when many Latin American countries were on the verge of becoming independent from Spain James Monroe first stated the doctrine during his seventh annual State of the Union Address to Congress It became a defining moment in the foreign policy of the United States and one of its longest-standing tenets

8 The Panic of 1819 was the first major financial crisis in the United States, which occurred during the end of the Era of Good Feelings. The new nation faced a depression in the late 1780s (which led directly to the establishment of the dollar and, perhaps indirectly, to the calls for a Constitutional Convention)

9  James Monroe once chased the Secretary of the Treasury out of the White House with a pair of fire tongs.  Monroe was the first president to ride on a steamboat.  Monroe was the ambassador of France

10 Monroe died in New York from heart failure and tuberculosis on July 4, 1831, becoming the third president to die on July 4. The James Monroe Tomb is a U.S. National Historic Landmark. He was originally buried in New, but 27 years later in 1858 the body was re-interred to the President's Circle at the Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia.
