Sketchbook Assignments 8 th Grade

Pen and Ink Sea Shells -Materials: Plenty of seashells of varied shapes/types. pencil, and eraser, fine tip permanent marker, 9” x 12” paper -Draw the seashells in pencil first (lightly). -Once at least 10 are completed, draw over the top of the pencil lines with the black marker. -Pay special attention to the directional lines within each shell as they will imply their form and create textures -Try stippling for added textures on sand dollars, starfish, and the like. Once all ink work is complete and dry, erase away all of the pencil marks leaving a very clean black on white drawing. -

Draw Your Own Shoe -Materials: pencil, 9” x 12” drawing paper -Students will need to use one of their shoes -Each student places a shoe in front of them, and begins by drawing the shoe with “contour lines” (needed informational lines). -Add values, textures, wrinkles, and details, to bring the shoe into focus. -Try to include a “Range of Values”, or in other words: a variety of tones including White, light grays, mid-grays, dark grays, and black. -

Value Scales with Circles -Materials: pencil, eraser, compass or circular objects for tracing, tissue or chamois for smudging pencil tones. -Create an interesting composition using only circles of varied sizes. Let some stand alone while others should overlap each other. -Fill in the circles with varied degrees of value (a scattered value scale). -Smudge the circles with a tissue to make the values solid. -Use an eraser to “clean up” some of the over- smudged, and “dirty” areas, for a clean and crisp drawing exhibiting good craftsmanship.

Amazing Eggs - Materials: Pencil, colored pencil, 9: x 12” drawing paper -Use shading to convey the illusion of form, and gradual value changes on objects that are round. Also teach highlights, form shadows, and cast shadows, as well as how to “ground” an object by placing a horizontal line behind it to give the illusion of a table/ledge. -Students learn these basic concepts and then draw the egg and a cracked opening. -”What could possibly be hatching from this egg?” The sky is the limit…From animals to cartoons, words, and rainbows, the students get to draw whatever they want.
