Write In The Margin List three words that come to mind when you hear the term “Hazardous”. Danger Poison Toxic Unsafe Radioactive

Main Text: Challenge Question How should unidentified materials be handled? Handle it carefully, and with caution Call an adult for help Do not touch, taste, or smell it If it gets on you, wash it off with soapy water Keep others away until adults arive

Write Hypothesis Write an “IF…, THEN…” statement about handling unidentified materials. For example: If I handle unidentified materials carefully, then… 1) nobody will get hurt 2) it might be identified safely 3) it might be removed safely

Background, page A4 Copy the BOLD text in the book. Hazardous Materials are substances that pose a danger to the health and safety of living organisms. They can cause injury or even death.

Vocabulary Words To Define Evidence: – proof, facts or truth of something Mixture: – something put together or combined

Procedure Read all steps before writing them. Write Handling Unknown Substances. Watch the “Hazardous Materials” video. As you watch, list the steps the hazmat team takes when approaching and handling the unidentified barrel. Discuss steps with class. Rewatch and record all additions to your list. Compare yours to class list, and add to yours.

Hazmat Steps: Example Assume it is hazardous. Call HazMat team. Observe from distance. See if it is safe (temp). Wear protective clothes and oxygen. If safe, equipment checks for fumes/vapors. If there is no obvious danger, open container and take sample for onsite testing. Check pH for acid/base corrosion.

Hazmat Steps: Example (continued) Put sample on a wire and burn sample to help identify it by its flame color. Research material identity by comparing test results to known items in Safety Data book. If it is safe, transport (move) container to another location for complete identity and proper disposal.

Conclusion: Analysis page A5 On separate paper, answer in 1 paragraph each. Write the four Analysis questions from page A5 in the textbook into your lab book. Answer them with at least one paragraph each Notice the symbols at the bottom of page A5 indicating how to handle each question. Question 1 should be answered by yourself while question 3 should be discussed with your group before writing down the answer.
