3 A1 Handling Hazardous Materials What does it mean when a substance is hazardous? What Hazardous substances can you name? How do you know if a substance is hazardous?

4 A1 Handling Hazardous Materials Observe the materials in the container – Do you think the materials in this mixture are hazardous? How many different substances do you think are in the bottle? What is your evidence? – Evidence – Information gained by observation or another source that can be used to formulate an idea. A fact or piece of information that helps you come to a conclusion.

5 A1 Handling Hazardous Materials Mixture – A combination of more than one pure substance that can be physically separated. Based on your observations, do you think the material in the container is a mixture or a pure substance? What is your evidence? – Write your answer in your science notebook: I think the material in the bottle is…because…

6 A1 Handling Hazardous Materials If you found an old jar under your sink that contained what appears to be rusty pieces of metal and an oily liquid, what would you do with the mixture?

Title it: Handling an Unknown Substance Hazardous Materials – a phrase that describes substances that are harmful to human health or the environment if not handled with caution. Can be solids, liquids, or gases.
