2 Weekly First Grade Fluency Homework Directions (this process should be repeated every night): 1. Student reads the passage aloud to parent, who is timing them for exactly one minute. *During this time, the parent is also keeping track of any errors the child makes while reading, but does not try to correct the child at this time. 2. Parent records the number of words read in one minute (use numbers at the end of each line to help you add quickly) and the number of errors. 3. Parent should NOW points out and corrects the errors made to the child. 4. Student should retell everything they remember about the story to the parent. GOAL: Read 60 words per minute with a minimum of 90% accuracy. Retell at least three events from the story in the correct sequence. Old School Long ago, schools were only for boys. Most schools just had one room. Boys of all ages 17 sat in the same room. The boys learned about reading. They learned about math. In 32 history, they learned about kings and queens and wars from long ago. Paper cost a lot 48 of money, so they wrote on little chalkboards called slates. The teacher was always a 63 man. He could be very mean. He could whip the boys if they were bad. There was no 81 place at school to cook lunch. The boys had to bring their lunches from home. There 97 were no lunch boxes like we have today. They used pails or baskets to carry their food. 114 Most people did not go to school for very lunch. Only rich men went to college. We 131 are very lucky to have schools were everyone can learn so many important things. 145 MondayTuesdayWednesdayThursday Words read in 1 minute - (subtract) number of mistakes = total words read correctly Parent initials
