1 László Moholy-Nagy By Audi Nash Period 4 4/26/2010

2 Early Life ► Moholy-Nagy was born to a Jewish- Hungarian family. He attended high school in the city of Szeged. In 1918 he formally converted to the Calvinist religion. Before and during the war he studied law in Budapest and served in World War I, where he sustained a serious injury. In Budapest, during his recovery period, Moholy-Nagy became involved with different newspapers journals.

3 Early Life Continued… ► In 1918 he was discharged from the Austro- Hungarian army, which game him the opportunity to attend the private art school of the Hungarian Fauve artist Robert Bereny. After the defeat of the Hungarian Soviet in August, he moved to Szeged where An exhibition of his work was held. Around November of 1919 he moved to Vienna then he moved again in early 1920, for Berlin.

4 Life as a Professor ► When he moved to in 1923 Berlin he replaced famous artist, Johannes Itten as instructor of the foundation course at the German art college, called “The Bauhaus”. ► When László Moholy-Nagy took over, The Bauhaus slowly became a school of design and industrial integration. Moholy-Nagy was a very versatile artist, this versatility transferred into the curriculum at The Bauhaus.

5 Later Career After resigning form The Bauhaus László Moholy-Nagy moved all over Europe trying to find a steady design career. ► He worked in film and stage design in Berlin and then in Paris and Holland. ► He formed part of the circle of émigré artists and intellectuals in London in 1935. ► The founder of The Bauhaus Walter Gropius and Moholy- Nagy planned to establish an English version of the Bauhaus but could not secure backing. ► When he couldn’t create his own school, he applied for a job at the Royal College of Art, which he didn’t get.

6 Later Career Continued… He then made his way in London by taking on various design jobs: ► At Imperial Airways ► Designing underwear displays ► Photographing buildings for The Architectural Review. ► He illustrated the book; An Oxford University Chest ► He designed special effects for the movie; Things to Come ► He created kinetic sculptures and abstract light effects for Denham Studios ► Gave lectures at The University of Hull.

7 In The U.S. ► Philanthropist, Walter Paepcke founded The US Bauhaus in Chicago and hired László Moholy-Nagy in 1937. ► In 1938 the school ran out of funds, and closed. ► After the school closed Walter Paepcke continued to support László Moholy-Nagy, he used this support to open the Institutte of Design in 1944. ► It is now part of the Illinois Institute of technology, and was the first institution to offer a PhD in design.

8 Career as a Whole ► Throughout his career, László Moholy-Nagy became proficient and innovative in the fields of photography, typography, sculpture, painting, printmaking, and industrial design. One of his main focuses was on photography.
