CORRECTABLE ERROR Rule 2.10 Officials are going to miss calls, make mistakes and even inadvertently set aside a rule. For the most part- once the call is missed, the mistake is made – it is Usually too late to do anything about it However, there are a few errors that can be corrected, if discovered in time. The best advice for the crew is to stay focused, and to use excellent communications skills

CORRECTABLE ERROR Rule 2.10 YOU MUST KNOW THIS The Five Correctable Errors The Window of Time Allowed to Correct the Error How to Resume Play

CORRECTABLE ERROR Rule 2.10 THE FIVE CORRECTABLE ERRORS: 1. Failure to award a merited free throw 2. Awarding an unmerited free throw 3. Permitting a Wrong Player to attempt a free throw 4. Attempting a Free Throw at the Wrong Basket (asleep) 5. Erroneously counting or canceling a score (usually when clock is running)

CORRECTABLE ERROR Rule 2.10 WINDOW OF TIME: In order to correct any of the errors listed, the error must be recognized during the window of time Since the first four errors involve free throw – the clock is stopped when these occur. This window of time to correct an error –BEGINS – when the CLOCK STARTS All start with a DEAD BALL Once the clock is running – there will eventually be a DEAD BALL ( remember there can be a dead ball with the clock running) When this First Dead Ball becomes LIVE the window of time to correct…ENDS

CORRECTABLE ERROR Rule 2.10 Since the other Correctable Error #5 – Erroneously Counting or Canceling a Score – usually happens with the clock running and the ball is DEAD (as in after a made basket) the window to correct is different The Window of Time BEGINS when the error OCCURS and ENDS the SECOND TIME the ball becomes live. (Casebook Play 2.10.1 – 2.10.6)

CORRECTABLE ERROR Rule 2.10 HOW TO RESUME PLAY If an error IS corrected – play shall be resumed from the POINT of INTERRUPTION EXCEPTION – If the corrected error involves awarding a merited free throw (should have shot FT, but didn’t) and there has been NO CHANGE of TEAM possession since the error was made – play shall resume as after any free throw (Casebook 2.10.1a)

CORRECTABLE ERROR Rule 2.10 NOTES If the error involves the shooting of a Free Throw: – #2 – shooting one when you shouldn’t – #3 – allowing the wrong shooter – #4 – shooting at the wrong hoop The Free Throw and all the activity during it shall be canceled (Excluding Unsportsmanlike, Flagrant, Intentional or Technical) Mistakes by the scorer can be corrected at any time – until approval of score During the playing time BEFORE the error is recognized – everything shall count as if there were no error (points, fouls, time) Read and Study Casebook Rule 2.10

CORRECTABLE ERROR Rule 2.10 REVIEW QUESTIONS to ASK: (Errors 1-4) “Has the clock started since the error?” No – You CAN correct error YES – “Have we had a dead ball since the clock started?” If NO – You can correct the error If YES - “Has that first Dead Ball become LIVE?” If NO – you can correct the error If YES – TOO LATE

CORRECTABLE ERROR Rule 2.10 CORRECTABLE ERROR #5 – ERROR COUNTING OR CANCELING SCORE “HAVE WE HAD TWO DEAD BALLS SINCE THE ERROR OCCURED?” If NO – you can correct error If YES – “Has the second dead ball become LIVE?” If NO – you can correct the error If YES – TOO LATE

CORRECTABLE ERROR Errors are presumed to occur when the ball is dead. If the clock was stopped – correct before the first dead ball becomes live after the clock has started. If clock kept running – correct before the 2 nd live ball.

1.Dead Ball - Error Made 1.Live Ball – Clock starts or keeps running. 2.1 st. Dead Ball – Correct to Here 3.2 nd. Live Ball – we are done!
