2 These members of the dog family can live in a variety of environments. ❖ Every sentence contains a subject and a predicate. ❖ A simple subject is the most important word or words in the complete subject. It is a noun or pronoun that tells whom or what the sentence is about. ❖ By identifying the simple subject in a sentence, you can determine whether the subject is singular or plural and choose the correct verb form to use with it.

3 These members of the dog family can live in a variety of environments. ❖ The subject of a request or command (an imperative sentence) usually is not named. ❖ The person spoken to, you, is the understood subject. ❖ The simple predicate is the verb that tells about the subject. It may tell what the subject did or what was done to the subject; or, it may link the subject to words that tell about it. A casual observer might mistake a red fox for a small furry dog.

4 ❖ The complete subject in a sentence is made up of a noun or pronoun and words that tell about it. ❖ The complete predicate in a sentence is made up of a verb and words that tell what the subject is, has, or does. These members of the dog family can live in a variety of environments.
