© OECD/IEA – 2010 WORLD BANK FAO UN EUROSTAT OPEC OAPEC The first step was to collect from each organisation its own set of definitions From InterEnerStat 1 to InterEnerStat 2

© OECD/IEA – 2009 From InterEnerStat 1 to InterEnerStat 2 The second step was to assemble definitions of products and flows from all organisations

© OECD/IEA – 2009 Act II - the 2 nd InterEnerStat Workshop 19-20 November 2007, IEA, Paris ●Review of the website including the pages on definitions ●Definition of a strategy towards harmonisation ●Decision to hire an international expert

© OECD/IEA – 2009 From InterEnerStat 2 to InterEnerStat 3 An expert has been contracted for: Looking at flows and products Looking at flows and products Highlighting similarities and differences Highlighting similarities and differences Proposing a “compromise” definition for each flow/product Proposing a “compromise” definition for each flow/product

© OECD/IEA – 2009 From InterEnerStat 3 to InterEnerStat 4 The revised ‘compromise’ definitions have been sent to all organisations for comments

© OECD/IEA – 2009 Comments have been sent by several organisations and assembled into two documents on flows and products From InterEnerStat 3 to InterEnerStat 4

© OECD/IEA – 2009 Act IV - the 4 th InterEnerStat Workshop October 2009, IEA, Paris ●Three intense days of discussion ●More than 95% of definitions agreed by participants ●Additional work passed to consultant and organisations

© OECD/IEA – 2009 The IEA has already made some small changes in its terminology (energy sector becomes energy industry own use, etc.) The harmonised definitions constitute the basis of the definitions proposed in Chapter 3 and Chapter 5 of the IRES Manual APEC has harmonised its questionnaire with Eurostat, IEA, UNECE Already a wide impact of InterEnerStat

© OECD/IEA – 2010 One questionnaire to all, dream or reality ? FAO UN EUROSTAT OPEC OAPEC ? AFREC

© OECD/IEA – 2009 And now… Still some work to do for finalising the harmonisation of all the definitions. A need to re-circulate the revised defintions to all the participating organisations Harmonisation of all the questionnaires, common training material, common training sessions are some examples of what could be next in terms of cooperation Enormous challenge. Active participation and great commitment from 20+ organisations. Experience and hard work from the consultant. Cooperation and willingness were and are keys for InterEnerStat and for strengthening international energy statistics. Thank you
