1 Canada at War  Many men and women went overseas to fight in WWII  Those who remained at home played an important role in the war effort  The unemployment of the depression disappeared as men and women worked to produce necessities for the war  The Federal Government played a key role in coordinating war production and planning the total war effort

2 War Measures Act  PM King and his liberal government revived the War Measure Act that gave the federal government extraordinary powers over people and industries Powers of the Federal Government:  Intern, arrest and imprison “enemy aliens”  ration goods  direct the allocation of resources  use censorship  raise taxes on certain goods

3 Government Support  Quite often propaganda is connected with negative emotions or placing a feeling of guilt  Governments needed money for the war effort so they focused their efforts on posters aimed at raising money from citizens

7 Card Stacking To make the best case possible for their side and the worst for the opposing viewpoint by carefully using only those facts that support their side. –Attempts to lead the audience into accepting the facts as a conclusion.

8 Band Wagon - Idea is to follow the crowd. This device creates the impression of widespread support. It reinforces the human desire to be on the winning side.

9 Testimonial  To associate a respected person to endorse a product or cause by giving it their stamp of approval.  The intended audience is expected to follow their example.

10 Plain Folks To convince the audience that the spokesperson is from humble origins, someone they can trust and who has their interests at heart.

11 Transfer –a technique used to carry over the authority and approval of something we respect – Propagandists often employ symbols (e.g., waving the flag) to stir emotions and win approval.
