I Am A Church Member Series Let Me Give You Some Clarification As To Where The Church Came From In Matthew 18:17 Jesus uses the term “church.” And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto you as a heathen man and a tax collector.

5. I Am A Church Member Series Since the church was not started until after Jesus’ death and resurrection, what does the term refer to? The word “church” in the New Testament: Greek - ekklesia, which means “to call out.” The only two references in the Gospels are from Jesus.

6. I Am A Church Member Series The other one occurs in Matthew 16:18. And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.

I Am A Church Member Series It’s true that the church did not officially start until the Day of Pentecost, but since the church is based on the person and work of Christ, it really began with Jesus. He is the one who is “calling out” people who will call upon Him for salvation. All who do so are automatically members of the body of Christ through the baptism of the Holy Spirit (see 1 Corinthians 12:13).

And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.
