2 Revolution Leader Fidel Castro  After the revolution in Cuba it looked like Castro was heading in the democratic direction. And Cuba and the United States had already had relations. So they continued their relations when he took over.

3 Revolution Leader Fidel Castro  Castro a few months in established military tribunals and political opponents, and put hundreds in jail. Cuba violated the 1952 military pact they had with the U.S. and on January 3, 1961 the United States broke relations with Cuba. Once that happened Castro formed an alliance with the Soviets. And many fled cuba.

4 Bay of Pigs Disaster  In 1961 president John Kennedy approved the plan by the military to invade Cuba. This was planned during the Eisenhower administration. Though Kennedy refused to give the US air support.

5 Bay of Pig Disaster  When the United States landed in the Bay of Pigs on April 17 1961,it did not go as planned. The invaders did get the support they were going to get from the Cubans. And the Cuban military easily repulsed the US.

6 Soviet Missile Crisis  In 1962 the Soviets set up missiles in Cuba which were able to hit places in the United States. To solve this Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev ordered the missiles to stand down in return for the United States to promise not to attack Cuba. And on September 1, 1977 the US established limited ties with Cuba. This made it easeier on the Cuban Americans to visit. Knowing that Castro organized a boat for 125,000 people to flee to Miami. Once the boat arrived we figured out that Cuba brought these people over because they didn’t want them apart of Cuba. The boat consisted of mental health patients, prisoners, homosexuals, and others unwanted by the Cuban government. Russia's aid had long supported the falling economy in Cuba. Until communism ended in eastern Europe. Cuba's trade also plummeted, putting them in a economic crisis.

7 Soviet Missile Crisis  As of 1997 Christmas became an official holiday due to the visit that Pope John Paul came to Cuba. In June of 2000 a young boy was found clinging to an inner tube from Miami trying to go back to Cuba. And many Cuban Americans wanted the boy to stay in Miami rather than going back to Cuba to his Father. In June 2004 president Bush tightened the how often you can go back to Cuba if you are a Cuban American to once every 3 years rather than once a year. Also limited to sending at most 50 dollars a day. As a result Castro band dollars in Cuba

8 Castro Announces Retirement Due to Poor Health  Seventeen months after his emergency intestinal surgery, Castro announces that he is not healthy enough to run in the upcoming parliament election. Although he has not withdrawal.

9 Castro Announces Retirement Due to Poor Health  In the January 8 th, 2008 parliament elections both Fidel and Raul Castro were elected to be the national assembly. And in February 2008 Fidel announced the end of his 49 years of power because of his retirement. Raul his Brother than took over.

10 Cubans Begin to Win Small Freedoms  In February of 2008 the UN signed an international covenant political and civil rights document, and an international covenant economic, social and cultural document. With this it gives the rights to the citizens of fair wage, right to work, social security, educations, and high standards of physical and mental health. It also ensure the citizens of political and civil freedom.

11 Cubans Begin to Win Small Freedoms  In march of 2009 president Obama repealed the reform of sending certain amounts of money to Cuba to Cuban Americans. Also president Obama signed a willingness to create warmer ties with Cuba. And in July of 2010 Castro announces he's going to release 52 political prisoners.

12 Cuba Makes Possible Steps Towards a New Leader Not a Castro  April 19, 2011 for the first time in 50 years a Castro was taking the place of the second highest place in the communist party. Which was filled by Jose Ramon Machado. In 2011 the citizens of cuba started to gain more rights. Such as the legalizing of buying and selling cars. And it also became legal to go into to business for themselves of many different jobs.

13 Cuba Makes Possible Steps Towards a New Leader Not a Castro  In December 2011 Cuba released 2,900 prisoners. 86 of th3ese prisoners were foreign. However Alan Gross who is an American put into Cubans prisons is not one of them who was released.

14 Pope Makes Long Awaited Visit  On March 26, 2012 pope Benedict XVI visited Cuba. After years of tension between the Cuban government and the church the pope stayed for three days. It was the first visit in 14 years since pope John Paul came.

15 Pope Makes Long Awaited Visit  Around 200,000 people attended the service. Which was held in Santiago de Cuba. People came from as far as Miami. Although many people came to the service people said they felt forced to come by members of the communist party.

16 Exit Visa Requirements is Dropped  On October 16,2012 the government announced you were not allowed to leave the country with a visa.

17 Exit Visa Requirements is Dropped  And in January 13, 2013 you were now allowed to leave with visa and stay abroad up to two years before loosing citizenship in Cuba.

18 Cuba Resumes Diplomatic Relations with the U.S  On December 17,2014 Cuba released Alan Gross who was an American prisoner who was sentenced for 15 years and was only there for 5. In response Obama announced they will start to restore diplomatic relations.

19 Cuba Resumes Diplomatic Relations with the U.S  First talks happened between Canada and Cuba. And Pope Francis and Cuba and finally in early 2015 they started to talk about restoring relations for the first time in 5 decades. In 2015 Obama and Castro met face to face for the first time. In they end they said our governments will have differences but will try to move forward from them.
