 The Nazi invasion of Russia  Largest military attack in WWII  2.5 million German soldiers were put on the border of the Soviet Union  Invaded over the borders  Because of the loss of time created by this operation, Hitler and his armies were caught in Russia during winter, weakening their forces

1941  Operation Barbarossa begins  Germans seal off Soviet resistance  cut off 300,00 Soviet man between Orsha and Smolensk  nearly 2/3 of the Red Army’s strength has already been eliminated  The Attack on Moscow begins  Siege of Leningrad begins  200 mile-long railroad work beings 1942  German resistance stiffens  Soviet offensive continues to win small victories (north and center)  Soviets run out of resources – the offensive ends  Crimean Front collapsed

The temporary weakening of the German forces was a result of the bad timing caused by Operation Barbarossa.

 German troops surrounded Leningrad  German troops encircled the city of Leningrad causing the citizens to be trapped  The most lethal siege in world history  Lasted exactly 900 days

1941  Germany army begins shelling of Leningrad  Soviet fortress of Leningrad falls to Germans  rations run out in Leningrad and citizens begin to starve 1942  800,000 of Leningrad citizens are evacuated through Lake Ladoga  Soviets launch a major offensive  Hitler orders two directives against Leningrad then orders a halt to any major offensives (winter) 1943  The Soviets enact Operation Spark retake the city of Shlusselburg 1944  Soviet armies overtake German Army Group North (two-week offensive)  Stalin declared the Siege of Leningrad as over

The Siege of Leningrad played a vital role in the German defeat on the Eastern Front of Europe, giving Hitler more time and power to take on other major Russian cities.

 Battle between German and Russia, to conquer Russia  Hand-to-hand combat to take individual streets  Considered to be the turning point in the war  Hitler and his armies were dominated by the Russians, and after the battle, were in full retreat

1942  The German summer offensive begins  STAVKA sets up a new “Stalingrad” Front  first German attempts to storm Stalingrad  Germans reach the bank of Volga  “Final” German attack on Stalingrad begins but is soon halted  Hitler orders all forces to take the defensive  Red Army prepares a plan for the relief of Stalingrad  Stalingrad Front takes the offensive  Germans withdraw 1943  Field Marshal von Paulas surrenders at Stalingrad after being bombarded with massive artillery

The tide turned in favor of the allies in the European Front of WWII after the Battle of Stalingrad.
