2 What is the project about? What are we aiming to do? We are adopting ‘Growth Mindset’ principles to encourage and develop good learning behaviour across our school. What is Growth Mindset? ‘When students and educators have a growth mindset, they understand that intelligence can be developed. Students focus on improvement instead of worrying about how smart they are. They work hard to learn more and get smarter.’ Mindset works

4 Good learners don’t say, ‘I can’t do it’, Instead they say, ‘I can’t do it yet’

5 Good learners learn from their mistakes, they persevere and practise. After all, FAIL means First Attempt In Learning.

13 What the parents said: Good learners… Are good listeners Show interest and want to learn Are well rested Have a good environment – quiet, pleasant surroundings Are well supported both at school and at home Are curious Are self-motivated Are risk takers who are happy to make mistakes Ask questions Persevere Share knowledge Understand WHY they are learning something Are provided with opportunities to learn in a way that suits them – in a multi-modal way Confidence Listen to others and share ideas

14 What the parents said continued: Good learners… Are able to problem solve Have been positively influenced by their parents Are those who come to school enthusiastic and excited, seeing learning as something positive Have enthusiasm to learn Concentrate well Are focused Have good listening skills Are inquisitive Are willing to work hard Are given help and support when needed Thrive in a calm, happy environment Are guided and encouraged by others Have self-belief – thinking they can do it/achieve it makes them want to learn and be motivated

15 What the parents said: Good learners… Thrive in an environment/culture where ‘mistakes’ (safe ones) which arise from genuine effort, exploration and curiosity are celebrated and evaluated just as much as immediate success. Work well in an atmosphere where there is a sense of fun to the learning Have good role models in parents, carers and teachers who enjoy the curiosity and discovery of learning Listen to instructions Ask questions if they don’t understand Are not afraid to ask for help

16 What the children said: Good learners… Take pride in the things they do Don’t mess around – they concentrate and focus Don’t get bored – they’re always interested Persevere Listen carefully, can block out noise, look at who is talking Concentrate and focus on their work Work hard Find time and space to do homework Independent but can work in a team when necessary Compromise and adapt to who they are working with Help others when they need it Use working walls Don’t think ‘I can’t’ they think, ‘I can with practice’ Learn from their mistakes Are honest about their work, they don’t copy others Include others’ ideas Sleep well so they can work hard Have a go

Adopt a growth mindset yourself Don’t give false praise, give encouragement Use the language of growth mindset – avoid saying, ‘there’s no such word as can’t’ instead, say, ‘you can’t yet’ Be a good role model for learning - demonstrate perseverance and resilience, suggest different strategies they could use in their learning
