Cody Jackson Week 1 Extension

Children = The World (Austrailia) I chose this picture for two reasons: – First, the world is looked at from a different direction than we are accustomed. The United States is on the right and not the left. – Second, this is a view of the world, not as a collection of political states but as a collection of people.

Untitled (Brazil) This picture once again represents a focus on people. This is cultural in nature because each of the associated countries or continents is wearing/being something representative from that country.

Untitled (China) This picture, unlike the two before it, represents looking at the world as it is inhabited by animals. This child values nature, specifically animals. I believe this is either something highly valued in Chinese culture or where the child is at animals are scarce.

Untitled (Estonia) This picture focuses on a myriad of things. There is a focus on cultural, particularly historical as seen by the pyramids, cowboy and buildings. It is also geographical in nature as evidenced by the kangaroos and kinds of vegetation that is represented.

Untitled (Germany) This picture is representative of a typical geographical map. This seems to be more of a strictly factual approach to how the world is.

Save the Earth (India) This is an interesting picture because it represents much of the western world as evil. It shows from darkness, to light. This could be due to how things are read, i.e. left to right. Or it could be because India, at least this child, sees the Western World as corrupt. It does list activities that need to be done to preserve the world for future generations.

Children United Around the World for a Better Future (Italy) This picture represents two ideas that are linked. – First, the world needs to be changed – Second, children are the ones to do it. This idea is similar to the last slide where the idea is to make the world better, not just preserve it.

A World Image Map No. 3 – What Shape is this Country (Japan) I chose this image admittedly because it was very creative. It’s a view of the world, that is designed to be creative and interesting rather than ideal or geographically correct. Also it represents the Pacific Ocean as the center of the world rather than the Atlantic.

The Animal’s World (Norway) This is another picture representing the world by the animals that inhabit it. This could be indicative of a love of animals, and a want to preserve the world for them.

Cherish Our Nature (Russian Federation) As with the previous slide, this picture is clearly concerned with preserving our natural resources such as animals and plants. The concern seems to be that this world belongs to us and if we want to keep seeing this beauty we have to preserve it.

Summation I chose those images because they represent how humans across the globe have the same concerns and values. Whether that be an appreciation for culture or an understanding that the world needs to be preserved for future generations. There were several pictures that focused on cultures through either architecture or ethnicity. Several pictures focused on preserving our natural resources. Several pictures focused on what we could do to better this world. Finally some focused on an artistic or geographical approach to understanding the world. In summation, all of the world people care about the same things, and that seems to be because what makes us human, are the same things. Caring for each other, caring for the environment, and caring for our future.
