2 Animals in Jamaica Jamaican Green Anole: These grow to be 6-9 inches long. Mongoose: Mostly feed on insects, crabs, earthworms, lizards, snakes, chickens, and rodents.

3 Animals…continued! Jamaican White Peacock: One of the most common butterflies to see in Jamaica.

4 This photo is of the Jamaican Blue Mountains. They are the longest mountain range in Jamaica! Montego Bay. The name Montego has an interesting history. This word comes from the Spanish word "Manteca" which means lard. Montego Bay was once a busy port from where the Spanish would ship the hogs they butchered in the mountains. Ochos Rios Is known as Jamaica’s Garden Center.

7 Authors cont… Michelle Cliff: She wrote a collection of poems called “The Land of Look Behind.” This came out in 1985.

8 Jamaica’s Government: Jamaica has a Constitutional Parliamentary democracy government. This means it is a government opporated under an authoritive document such as a constitution. It sets forth a system of fundamental laws and principles that determines the nature, functions, and limits of that government. It is also a political system in which the legislature selects the government- a prime minister, premier, or chancellor along with cabinet members-according to the party strength as expressed in elections; by this system, the government requires a dual responsibility to the people as well as to the parliament.

10 Culture in Jamaica:  Most culture of Jamaica comes from blacks and the slaves, who suffered and resisted harsh conditions of forced labor.  The largest religion in Jamaica is the Christian faith.  Dance is very important in Jamaica. Early folk rhymes and movements often enhanced celebrations and holidays. More recently dances have become associated with the music of Jamaica.

13 History of Jamaica  First inhabited by Arawak natives.  Christopher Columbus claimed it for Spain but it took only decades after his death for almost all Arawaks to disappear.  All through its history is was victim to pirate raids especially 1555-1655. The final attack passed the rule of Jamaica to the English.

14 Topography/Geography:  Location: An island in the Caribbean sea south of Cuba.  Area is slightly smaller than Connecticut. Total of 10,991 square kilometers.  Climate is tropical, hot, humid, and temperature interior.  Terrain is mostly mountains with narrow, discontinuous coastal plain.  Lowest point in elevation is the Caribbean Sea at 0 meters. Highest point is Blue Mountain Peak at 2,256 meters.

15 Food in Jamaica: Callaloo and Saltfish: popularly eaten for breakfast on Saturday and Sunday morning. Ackee: a tropical evergreen tree that grows to be 30 feet tall and produces a pear shaped fruit. Sorrel Chutney: Christmas recipe that is excellent on chicken, fish, on pork, or in sandwiches.
