W HY SHOULD WE STUDY WORLD HISTORY ? Brainstorm See p. 3 1. Prepares us for the future Follow patterns 2. Gives cultural identity don’t fall into “cultural amnesia” 3. Declares God’s glory see Bible as more than just a book God is involved - see HIS greatness

W HAT ARE THE TYPES OF SOURCES USED BY HISTORIANS ? Primary sources - produced at time of the event Secondary sources - used to explain or interpret primary sources ArtifactsTraditionWritten Record

H OW DO HISTORIANS PRODUCE A HISTORICAL ACCOUNT ? Evaluate historical sources Historical synthesis Historical interpretation In your own words explain each step.

H OW DOES ONE ’ S WORLDVIEW AFFECT THEIR HISTORICAL WORK ? Brainstorm BACKGROUND INFLUENCES BIAS Secular humanistChristian Most reliable path to truth human reason informed by science Bible, God’s Word Universe origins interaction of natural forces Direct act of God Why is the universe here? Unanswerable TO DECLARE GOD’S GLORY Where is the world headed? interaction of natural forces will eventually lead to catastrophic destruction divine judgment and restoration VSVS

H OW SHOULD A C HRISTIAN WORLDVIEW AFFECT THE WAY A BELIEVER INTERPRETS HISTORY ? 1. Realize God has divine control of history. DIVINE PROVIDENCE 2. Realize that human depravity leads to poor choices within society. human depravity – every aspect of every human’s being (body, will, mind, and emotions) are tainted (stained) by sin. (We inherited the gene from Adam, the first human, who chose his wife over God.) 3. Realize that the goal of history is redemption through Christ’s love.

1.1.4 Explain how a Christian worldview should affect the way a believer interprets history. 1. Realize God has divine control of history. There is no event that is out of God’s control or that does not help to accomplish His purpose for this world. - Affects our study of history in 2 ways: 1. it reminds us to be historic optimists. (We do not deny that the world is evil, but is also not out of control.) 2. It reminds us to study history with God’s will in mind. Limitations of knowing God’s will in history: 1. our lack of knowledge of the past. 2. our own fallenness. (We are all sinners, therefore, what we do know about the past we tend to interpret in selfish ways.) 3. our ignorance of God’s will. 2. Realize that human depravity is the reason for the world’s problems. 3. Realize that the goal of history is redemption through Christ’s love. God’s redemptive love in Christ stands at the center of human history.

What is history? Can history change? Is there a difference between history and the past? How do you learn history? What makes something (a piece of writing or an artifact) a good piece of information about the past? What role does bias play in recording, learning, and understanding history?

R ESPOND TO THE FOLLOWING S TATEMENT : “It is not possible to use the study of history to prepare for the future. Every civilization is unique. The legitimate parallels between our lives and the lives of previous generations are too few and far between.”

H OW CAN THE B IBLE BE EXPLAINED AS THE OLDEST HISTORY BOOK AVAILABLE FOR US ? Traces history to times that are not clearly recorded anywhere else. Begins with two truths about Creation: 1. God existed when nothing else did. 2. All that exists was made by HIM.

W HAT IS THE P URPOSE OF M ANKIND ? 1. “Subdue” the earth - CREATION MANDATE - Genesis 1:28 2. Advance environment through our labor. 3. Advance civilizations through specialization and organization.

What are the 2 primary effects of the Fall? Man turned to self Man’s relationship with God was hindered

Genesis 3:15 “And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed”

How has the flow of history revealed Genesis 3:15 as the thesis for human history? seed of the womanseed of the serpent ABELCAIN Seth and descendants have long lives close in their relationship to God Lamech - polygamy Lived apart from God’s will Seth’s descendants eventually mixed with Cain’s to produce corruption FLOOD Shem and Japheth Hebrews Ham Canaanites - Tower of Babel CONFUSION OF LANGUAGES RISE OF NATIONS form according to common language
