Integumentary System Structures and Functions of the Integumentary System By K. Rodriguez

The skin's jobs are:  forms protective layer over body. Keeps water in, germs out  makes vitamin D  regulate body temperature by producing sweat  excrete waste and oil to soften and protect  sense of touch

Epidermis Dermis The Skin has three layers: Fatty Layer

Epidermis Layer Epidermis is the outer most layer of skin, made of flat scale like cells called squamous cells, and round cells called basal cells. ◦As new cells form, they start gradually moving upward. When they die they become part of the surface of the epidermis. Once they shed, they are replaced by the dead cells below them. ◦Melanin is produced deep inside the epidermis.

Melanin Melanocytes, are cells in the skin that produce Melanin. Melanin is the pigment, or colored substance, which gives color to the skin, hair, and iris of the eye.. The darker the skin, the more melanin is produced.

Dermis The dermis is the lower layer of the skin. ◦This is where the nerves, blood vessels, sweat glands, hairs, and oil glands are located.

Sweat glands produce perspiration, which helps to regulate a bodies temperature. Sweat reaches the surface through openings in the skin called pores

In the dermis is located follicles that produce strands of hair. Oil is located in glands around the follicle. Not only does it waterproof the hair, it also helps keep the skin moist.

Steps to keep skin healthy!! 1. Protect from Sun (Use sunscreen!!) 2. Don’t smoke If you don’t start you won’t have to stop 3. Treat skin gently 4. Eat Healthy 5. Manage Stress

ACNE One way to control acne, it to simply wash your skin. This simple step helps control oiliness and will help keep skin from becoming infected by more bacteria. It is one of the most common problems among teens. Acne is formed when oil glands become clogged with oil and a bacterial infection occurs.

Skin Cancer Cancer is disease, when some body cells divide uncontrollably. Repeated exposure to sunlight can damage skin cells and cause them to become cancerous.
