October 27,2014 Masie Learning Conference Moving from the Classroom to Virtual Instructor-Led Training Lab Activities

Activity 1 – Create a Proposal Activity Goal: Create a proposal to your organization’s leadership including a virtual training solution that addresses your business needs. Directions 1.Review the TWC background information and discuss at your table. 2. Pick a situation from your group to use for your proposal. 3.Create a proposal that addresses the following: a)Target audience b)Current learning modalities in place c)Reaction to virtual learning to date d)Cultural roadblocks to a non-classroom based environment You have 15 minutes to create the proposal – be prepared to share!

Activity 1 – TWC Background Based on the current need for scalable, consistent new hire training across the company, we proposed a 6-week virtual training solution for all newly hired Account Executives. We heard the following concerns from all over the company: “I just like face-to-face training” both participants and facilitators “BORING! – how can anyone sit through hours and hours of presentation" “There is NO way someone can learn that without being in a room – how can we tell that they got anything out of it” “How can I as a facilitator be part of the class if I am not there?”

Activity 2 – Design Possibilities Activity Goal: Generate a list of design possibilities that would support your proposal Directions 1.Review the TWC background information and discuss at your table. 2. Use the proposal created in Activity 1 and generate a list of design possibilities. Possible considerations for your list: What tools are available Design resources How do you create virtual engagement and accountability Does your plan need to include systems training How long can someone be in the virtual classroom at a time You have 15 minutes to generate your list – be prepared to share!

Activity 2 – TWC Background The majority of our content had been delivered in the classroom - ALWAYS Recent adoption of a virtual facilitation tool (Adobe Connect) provided the ability to simulate some classroom activities virtually 60% of the new hire content revolved around systems and tools – we had to think differently about how to set up, monitor and debrief activities To truly leverage the Adobe Connect tool, design time was more than doubled, which impacted our capacity model

Activity 3 – Facilitation Activity Goal: Create a job description for the ideal candidate to facilitate your virtual class Directions 1.Review the TWC background information and discuss at your table. 2. Using your proposal and design list, create a job description for your virtual facilitators. 3.Consider the following for your job description: a)What are your organizations’ expectations ? b)What will the facilitators be accountable for? c)What competencies lend to a virtual environment ? d)What tools do you expect facilitators to use? You have 15 minutes to generate your list – be prepared to share!

Activity 3 – TWC Background  All facilitators were hired to conduct face-to-face classroom sessions  Many facilitators were subject matter experts, earning their role for being good at the job they were now teaching  Many facilitators did not have experience with virtual delivery or using virtual tools  Facilitators shared many of the same concerns as the leaders and employees  Facilitators used to visually tracking each trainee and addressing concerns noticed on the spot
