Municipal Solid Waste and its Components with Dangerous Potencial Bláha, A. Responsible Care 5 th International Conference Theme: Dangerous Wastes Prague, Mai 15 th, 2008

Chronology of the WtE Plant Malešice in 1986  Decission to built WtE Malešice/Prague in 1988  Start up of the construction in 1989  Inclusion of the wet washing stage into the planing (1988 first design included only ESP) in 6/1998  Start up of test runs in 7/1998  Start up of trial operation in 9/1998  Transition to the permanent operation in 2000  Addition of SNCR DeNOx technology to the process (for reduction of NOx in the flue gas) in 2000  Application of active carbon into the lime suspension (PCDD/F and Hg adsorption in the wet washing stage) in 2006  Start up of the new PCS Delta V in 2007  Addition of SCR DeDiox technology

Description of the ZEVO Technology Checking the entire waste for sources of ionising radiation Weighting and crushing of voluminous waste Storage of waste in above ground dump Incineration SNCR DeNitrification Semidry absorption Electrostatic dust separation SCR DeDiox Wet flue gas washing (scrubber and absorber) Flue gas reheating Flue gas fan Chimney

Technological Schema

Process Parameters 4 lines each for 15 t/h of municipal solid waste Facility capacity of 310.000 t/a Cylindrical grates Vertical three-draw boilers Steam parametres 235°C / 1,37MPa / 36t/h for each line 60.000-80.000 Nm 3 /h of flue gas per line Incineration reduces the waste volume by 90% Incineration reduces the waste weight by 70% Heating value around 10 MJ/kg 80.000 t/a of slag usable as construction material 5.500 t/a of scrap iron usable as secondary raw material Solid waste residue (fly ash and absorption salts) of 8.700 t/a Supply of 1.900 TJ heat (i.e.the need of 30.000 households)

PCDD/F Outlet Balance of ZEVO 2000-2006

Material and Energy Balances

WtE Slag in Comparison with Basalt

PCDD/F Concentration in MSW Components

PCDD/F Sources in MSW

Average 2007 daily values compared with EU law 86/2002 Emissions

between centarlized and local heat generation Comparison of Emissions

Conclusions WtE is a modern technology with emissions below 20% of the limit sets Substantial reduction of the waste volume Recovery of the contained energy Recovery of iron scrap Immobilisation of the dangerous potential by solidification Slag utilisation as a construction material WtE is a contributor to lowering of CO 2 emissions WtE is an important part of clever waste management WtE emissions are influenced by recycling efficacy and thus by households

Thank you for your attention Presented by Dr.-Ing. Aleš Bláha, director of the WtE plant Malešice/Prague CZ email:blahaa@psas.cz www.psas.cz
