4 3 Levels of DR planning When changing or investigating a DR plan it is important to start in the right place. DR is no longer the crater in the ground scenario.

5 Level 1- Application Issues Loss of file folder Virus i.e. Cryptolocker Database corruption – email server goes down Bad upgrade

6 Level 2- Primary Infrastructure Loss of primary storage Main switch No internet connection No power in data center Large scale infection of Cryptolocker (more then 50%) Data center migration Corruption

7 Level 3- The Crater Crater in ground Weather (Snow, ice, tornado etc.) Fire Flood No staff access All existing infrastructure has been destroyed

8 All things considered When you evaluate all the scenarios, organizations are faced with a tough reality: Traditional backup solutions High availability or clustered solutions DR planning requires specific network configurations

9 You tested your DR solution. So what?

10 Testing Scenario 1- Cryptolocker Cryptolocker has been found and 25% of all files have been encrypted and the virus is spreading fast.

11 Recovering From Cryptolocker Step 1: Identify the source and disconnect from the network. SAN replication, there are now 2 infected copies. Step 2: Identify all encrypted files and time frame of infection. We have seen anywhere from a couple hours to multiple days. Step 3: You will now need to utilize item level recovery to only recover infected files.

12 Testing Scenario 2- The Heat Is On A raccoon chews through power to the data center. Causes a power outage and power is restored. However, the AC did not turn back on. The data center started to heat up and bits started to flip on the SAN. The flipped bits were replicated perfectly to the DR site.

13 Recovery from the Heat Step 1: Find the most recent backup prior to the outage. This should be independent of your SAN. (Reason: SanSnap shots could be corrupted as well) Step 2: Rebuild environment from the ground up. If your recovery time objective (SLA) was hours, your recovery could now take days.

14 Testing Scenario 3 – The EMP The worst has happened: an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) has been dropped on the data center. All infrastructure has been completely wiped out. The main location is in ashes and all other sites have gone completely dark.

15 The EMP Recovery Step 1: Enact your current DR plan on secondary location. Step 2: You have 10 remote sites and 1000 users who can’t connect.

16 The EMP Recovery The most important part of a DR strategy is the network, like ORION, which provides a reliable backbone upon which to build a robust network recovery plan. How do you fail it over?

17 In-House Vs DRaaS

18 Typical in-house deployments 1.Traditional backups - either recovering from tapes or disk. Simply wait, order new hardware and recover. 2.Active – Active mirroring both locally and offsite. 3.A combination of high availability mirroring offsite with traditional backups.

19 Pros & Cons of In-House ProsCons It is easier not to rock the boat and maintain the status quo. HA and Active mirroring require the purchasing double the infrastructure. No need to prove that multi- tenancy is secure. Staff are required to manage double the infrastructure. You must maintain a full, second, up-to-date site.

20 Ideal DRaaS Deployment Everything is managed. This includes networking, the failover and the failback process. Recovery point objectives are done in seconds. Recovery time objectives is less than 5 minutes. The ability to recover from any scenario in the 3 levels of planning. The network recovery plan is given as much consideration and attention as the ability to recover applications.

21 Pros and Cons of DRaaS ConsPros You will have to address any negative stigmas surrounding the “cloud.” You will now have a partner/team who specializes in the design and implementation of a well rounded DR solution. Shifting from large capital purchases to operational costs. Your staff can now focus on projects that deliver a measurable, positive impact to the organization.

22 Conclusion DR is more then just a crater in the ground. Understanding the full picture will allow you to choose the correct technology. Find a partner who offers both DRaaS and/or in house options for Disaster Recovery. Hardware vendors only want to sell more hardware. Questions?
