Advancing and expanding trolleybus public transport in Gdynia by the usage of batteries as additional power supply Marta Woronowicz, PKT Gdynia

Platzhalter Headline Title Gdynia public transport facts 250.000 inhabitants Length of public roads: 395.5km Length of public transport routes: 244,4 km Motorization rate: 450 cars/1000 inhabitants) Transport modes market share: 50/50 individual transport and public transport: 77% of all Gdynia inhabitants live within a 5 min. walk from a bus/trolleybus stop Trolleybus transport operated by PKT constitutes 30% of the whole public transport 93 trolleybuses run ca. 5 million vehicle kilometres a year on 12 day lines on ca. 90 km of traction supplied by 10 traction substations 3 trolleybus cities in Poland (Gdynia, Lublin, Tychy)

Platzhalter Headline Title Gdynia trolleybus transport development through complementary EU projects Innovative solutions: ■ new technology battery trolleys ■ supercaps on substations ■ training programmes in safe eco- driving ■ published handbook on conversion of a diesel bus into a trolleybus ■ study on areas predisposed for supercap installation

Platzhalter Headline Title ELIPTIC – implementation of 2 use cases by PKT and UG 1.Opportunity of (re)charging of ebuses connecting Tri-city agglomeration based on trolleybus infrastructure – feasibility study ► analysis of the possibilities how to further electrify public transport services in Tri-City partly unwired extension line has been identified to a sports stadium ERGO ARENA in Gdansk ( trolley will get off the traction in Sopot and go to ARENA on Li-Ion batteries - 5 km) analysis of creating a loading and parking loop for any electric vehicles in the vicinity of the stadium analysis of the possibility of connecting the Gdynia trolleybus line with Gdansk tram line by means of the Li-Ion trolleys running to Gdansk on batteries analysis of closing the loop with a meeting/charging point based on Gdansk tram system (potential use of a tram substation for loading the battery hybrid trolley and other e-vehicles in the future)

Platzhalter Headline Title ELIPTIC – implementation of 2 use cases by PKT and UG 2. Replacing diesel bus lines by extending trolleybus network with trolley-hybrids – feasibility study and demo ► analysis of the trolleybus network to identify potential routes for extending the existing trolleybus courses with trolley- battery hybrid buses running independently off traction on Li-Ion batteries this feasibility study will be partly validated on just being collected CIVITAS-DYNAMO data from the currently running project demonstration of extending trolleybus operation of the line 21 which now servicing new unwired central area in Gdynia (off traction extension by 2 km) based on this experience, PKT (supported by UG) will evaluate possibilities (incl. CBA/emissions reduction) for further extension and potential replacement of diesel bus lines with Li-Ion battery trolleys

Platzhalter Headline Title Genesis of battery trolleybuses in Gdynia 2008 - PKT‘s preparation to the fleet modernization co-financed by EU funds Basic requirement – auxiliary drive in trolleybuses Diesel drive  long distatance  flexibility  popular solution Battery  promising technology  zero emission  easy maintenance („all electric“) Decision makers

Platzhalter Headline Title Ni-Cd battery Cells Fans

Platzhalter Headline Title DC/DC converter Battery

Platzhalter Headline Title Plans for the future with the same battery capacity, and 3 more with a double battery capacity to be purchased with our own funds; vehicles to arrive this year from nationally governed EU funds we are going to apply for more vehicles with Li-Ion batteries and exchange of the Ni-Cd batteries to Li-Ion batteries in all remaining trolleybuses thanks to batttery technology there is no need to build costly wired infrastructure ( ca. 240 000 EUR per 1 km) realistic plans for further unwired extension of several trolleybus lines to some districts of Gdynia (incl. ELIPTIC studies) building of several charging points for e-vehicles is now seriously considered (incl. ELIPTIC studies) after purchasing 2 Solaris trolleybuses with Li-Ion batteries in CIVITAS DYN@MO project, PKT through a public tender ordered 1

Platzhalter Headline Title Welcome to Gdynia! Joint UITP Trolleybus Commitee and ELIPTIC project partner meeting 8-10 June 2016 CIVITAS FORUM 2016 28-30 September 2016
