Objectives: We will analyzes the functions of the unirary system IDENTIFY AND DESCRIBE FUNCTIONS OF THE MAJOR ORGANS OF THE EXCRETORY SYSTEM. Agenda: 1.Do Now 2.Mini-Lesson 3.Work Period 4.Exit Slip Agenda: 1.Do Now 2.Mini-Lesson 3.Work Period 4.Exit Slip Unit 2: Matter & Its Place in Chemistry Aim: Unit 6: Urination Station (Excretory System)
2
Do now: How do the urinary system work? Do now: How do the urinary system work? Aim:Identify and describe functions of the major organs of the excretory system Do Now-: 5 min
3
Functions of the Urinary System Elimination of waste products Nitrogenous wastes Toxins Drugs Regulate aspects of homeostasis Water balance Electrolytes Blood Pressure Red blood cell production Functions of the Urinary System Elimination of waste products Nitrogenous wastes Toxins Drugs Regulate aspects of homeostasis Water balance Electrolytes Blood Pressure Red blood cell production Aim Identify and describe the function of the major organs of the excretory system
4
Organs of the Urinary system Kidney Ureters Urinary bladder Urethra Identify and describe functions of the major organs of the excretory
5
Regions of the kidney Renal cortex-outer region Renal medulla – inside the cortex Renal pelvis – inner collecting tube Medullary pyramids – triangular regions of tissue in the medulla Calyces – cup-shaped structures that funnel urine towards the renal pelvis Aim: Identify and describe functions of the major organs of the excretory
6
Nephrons The filtering units of the kidneys Responsible for forming urine Main structures of the nephrons Glomerulus Renal tubule Aim Identify and describe the functions of the major organs of the excretory system
7
Glomerulus Aim Identify and describe the function of the major organs of the excretory system A specialized capillary bed Attached to arterioles on both sides (maintains high pressure) Large afferent arteriole Narrow efferent arteriole Capillaries are covered with podocytes from the renal tubule The glomerulus sits within a glomerular capsule (the first part of the renal tubule)
8
Renal Tubule Glomerular (Bowman’s) capsule Proximal convoluted tubule Loop of Henle Distal convoluted tubule Aim Identify and describe the function of the major organs of the excretory system
9
Types of Nephrons Cortical nephrons Located entirely in the cortex Includes most nephrons Juxtamedullary nephrons –Found at the boundary of the cortex and medulla Aim Identify and describe the function of the major organs sysytem
10
Urine Formation process Filtration Reabsorption Secretion Aim Identify and describe the function of the major organs of the excretory system
11
Exit Slip 1.)What blood vessel removes blood from the kidney? 2.)What are the two bladder in the body? 3.)Name the type of nephrons? Aim Identify and describe the function of the major organ system
