6 THEME IN POETRY Theme is the central, often implicit, meaning that permeates all aspects of the poem. Don’t confuse theme with the subject. The subject is what the poem is about. Example: Edgar Allen Poe’s The Raven  Subject: The poem is about a man talking to a raven who only responds with “Nevermore.”  Theme: Death is irreversible and unavoidable.

7 Where Do We Learn Life’s Lessons? What are some life lessons you have learned? How did you learn the lesson? Have you tried to teach the lesson to others? If so, why? Do you think you were successful

8 Other lessons may include: Everyone deserves a second chance. A crisis in confidence or identity can lead to personal growth. We often learn from the mistakes of past generations.

9 How did what you have learned affect your behavior as well as their understanding of the world and other people? What lessons have really shaped who you are today? What lessons were the hardest to learn? Why?

10 Universal themes are based on experiences and feelings that everyone goes through.

12 Clues to Theme Use story elements as clues to figure out theme. Questions to answer: How does the title relate to this theme? How do the story conflicts support it? How do the characters’ actions or statements hint at the theme? How does the setting support it? Which symbols support the theme?

15 Theme in poetry Open your Interactive reader to page 210. Answer the questions as we go over the poems on pages210-214. Complete the after reading pages on page 215-217.

17 CLOSURE 3, 2, 1 Write three things you learned about universal themes. Write two examples of gerunds. Write one question you still have about Romeo and Juliet.
