Chapter 24 Digestive System
2
Digestive Processes Ingestion Movement / peristalsis Digestion (chemical & mechanical) Absorption Defecation
5
Anatomical Terms Peritoneum (visceral & parietal) Mesentery Falciform ligament Omentum (lesser & greater) Mesocolon
11
1.Water 2.Solutes 3.Bactericides 4.Amylase
15
Functions 1.Mix gastric juice with food 2.Food reservoir 3.Kills bacteria 4.Breaks down proteins 5.Absorb Vit B12 6.Secretes gastrin into blood 7.Absorbs some small molecules
19
Gastric Digestion Zymogenic (peptic) (Chief) cells = pepsin Parietal (oxyntic) cells = HCl Mucous cells Enteroendocrine cells = gastrin for gastric activities Gastric lipase & rennin
24
Liver Function Carbohydrate metabolism Fat metabolism Protein metabolism Removal of drugs & hormones Excretion of bile Synthesis of bile salts Storage of vitamins, minerals and glycogen Phagocytosis of WBC’s and RBC’s Activation of vitamin D Removal of toxins (includes ammonia) Manufactures heparin
25
Bile Bile consists of water, bile salts, cholesterol, phospholipids, bile pigments and ions. Bile pigment consists of iron, globin, and bilirubin (from the heme). Iron and globin are recycled some bilirubin is excreted in bile.
31
Pancreas Islets of Langerhans produce insulin and glucagon Acini produce pancreatic juice – –Sodium bicarbonate –Amylase –Trypsin –Lipase –Ribonuclease –Deoxyribonuclease
38
Intestinal Juice Water and mucus Maltase, Sucrase and lactase Peptidase Ribonuclease Deoxyribonuclease Lactose intolerance = no lactase
47
