2 Rights Be protected from unfair government actions Be treated equally under the law Enjoy basic freedoms

3 Due Process 5 th Amendment right Government must follow certain rules before it takes away a right or freedom from a citizen Example trial by jury if accused of a crime

4 Equal Protection 14 th Amendment Law must treat all people in the same way

5 Basic Freedoms Outlined in the Bill of Rights (first 10 amendments) Have certain limits – cannot exercise our rights if they hurt others or take away their rights or freedoms

6 Citizen Person who owes loyalty to a country and receives its protection Natural born citizen – born on US soil (includes territories and military bases around the world) or born in another country but has a parent who is a US citizen

7 Naturalization Process to become a US citizen if you were born in another country

8 Responsibilities and Duties Duty – something you must do (pay taxes, follow laws, sit on a jury when called) Responsibilities – things a person should do but are not required ( vote, take part in government, respect the rights of others)
